PRP Hair Restorationat SkinArtMD Burnaby

Reactivate dormant follicles with your own growth factors

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is an autologous biologic therapy — drawn from your own blood, concentrated by centrifuge, and injected directly into the scalp. The resulting growth factors (PDGF, VEGF, IGF-1) stimulate dormant follicles and improve scalp circulation without synthetic agents or surgery. At SkinArtMD Burnaby, Dr. Sharon Fong (CPSBC) personally leads every treatment session. Mandarin and Cantonese consultations available.

Treatment Overview

Physician-Led PRP for Hair Restoration

At SkinArtMD Burnaby, PRP hair therapy is a physician-administered medical procedure — not a spa service. Dr. Sharon Fong (CPSBC) conducts a comprehensive scalp assessment before treatment, identifies the hair loss pattern, and determines the appropriate injection protocol. A standard series consists of 3–4 monthly sessions, with maintenance treatments 2–4 times per year to sustain results.

PRP for hair restoration is best suited to patients with early-to-mid androgenetic alopecia (AGA), female pattern hair loss (FPHL), or post-stress (telogen effluvium) shedding — stages where living follicles remain and can respond to growth factor stimulation. It is not indicated for completely bald scalp or active alopecia areata flare. Dr. Fong will assess your Norwood or Ludwig scale classification at consultation to confirm candidacy.

Targeted Growth Factor Delivery

Concentrated PRP is injected at follicle depth across thinning zones, delivering a precise biologic signal where it is needed most.

Evidence-Informed Protocol

Treatment protocols are based on published clinical literature on PRP for androgenetic alopecia. Dr. Fong adapts injection density and platelet concentration to each patient's loss pattern and scalp condition.

Multilingual Care

SkinArtMD Burnaby offers consultations in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese — ensuring every patient fully understands their treatment plan and aftercare.

The Science Behind PRP

Autologous Biologic Mechanism

PRP therapy leverages the body's own wound-healing cascade. Activated platelets release alpha granules packed with growth factors that regulate cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and tissue repair. When delivered to the dermal papilla of hair follicles, these signals drive the follicular unit back toward the anagen (growth) phase.

Centrifugation & Concentration

A small blood draw (approx. 20–30 mL) is processed in a calibrated centrifuge to separate red cells from platelet-rich plasma, yielding a concentrate at 4–6× baseline platelet count.

Growth Factor Activation

Key growth factors released by activated platelets — PDGF (platelet-derived), VEGF (vascular endothelial), and IGF-1 (insulin-like) — directly stimulate dermal papilla cells and follicle stem cells.

Targeted Scalp Injection

PRP is delivered via fine-needle microinjections at the level of the hair follicle bulge across thinning zones. Session duration is approximately 60–75 minutes including preparation.

Autologous Safety Profile

Using your own blood eliminates foreign-substance risk. As a regulated medical procedure administered by a CPSBC physician, PRP at SkinArtMD meets the clinical standard required for injectable biologics in BC.

Candidacy Assessment

Who Responds Best to PRP

Dr. Sharon Fong will complete a thorough scalp and medical assessment at your consultation to confirm whether PRP is appropriate for your specific hair loss pattern.

Why SkinArtMD Burnaby

Physician-Led Care with Cultural Fluency

At SkinArtMD Burnaby, PRP hair restoration is a physician-administered medical procedure with the clinical rigour your hair health deserves.

1

Dr. Sharon Fong, CPSBC

Every PRP hair session at SkinArtMD is personally administered by Dr. Sharon Fong — a CPSBC-registered physician with focused training in aesthetic medicine. Treatment planning, injection technique, and follow-up assessments are all physician-led.

2

Calibrated Concentration Protocol

PRP efficacy depends on platelet concentration and activation method. We use a standardized centrifugation protocol to ensure consistent platelet yield and growth factor delivery at every session.

3

Comprehensive Scalp Assessment

Before any injection, Dr. Fong evaluates your hair loss pattern, scalp health, and medical history. Complicating factors — anticoagulants, thyroid conditions, nutritional deficiencies — are identified and addressed before beginning the series.

4

Mandarin & Cantonese Service

From initial consultation through post-treatment follow-up, our team communicates fluently in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese — so nothing gets lost in translation when discussing your treatment plan or managing expectations.

Treatment Zones

Scalp Coverage by Hair Loss Pattern

PRP injections are mapped to the specific thinning zones identified in your pre-treatment scalp assessment. Dr. Fong customizes injection density and coverage based on your individual loss pattern.

Crown / Vertex

The most common AGA thinning zone in men — typically the first area to show measurable density improvement after a PRP series.

Frontal Hairline

Receding frontal hairlines and temporal recession are treated with precision micro-injections targeting the follicular unit at the hairline margin.

Temples

Temporal thinning is common in both men and women with AGA. PRP helps stabilize regression and can improve density in early-stage temple recession.

Mid-Scalp

Diffuse thinning across the top and mid-scalp — characteristic of female pattern hair loss (Ludwig I–II) — responds well to broad-coverage PRP injection.

Diffuse / Overall Thinning

For generalized density loss from telogen effluvium or early AGA, PRP can be applied across the full scalp to support follicle reactivation throughout.

SkinArtMD Treatment Protocol

Your PRP Hair Restoration Journey

Every step of your PRP journey at SkinArtMD is physician-supervised, from initial scalp assessment through your post-series follow-up.

Before Your Session

1

Discontinue NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen) and omega-3 supplements 5–7 days before treatment to minimize bleeding and bruising

2

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior — it can impair platelet function and increase post-injection sensitivity

3

Arrive well-hydrated; adequate hydration improves blood draw comfort and plasma yield

4

Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo the morning of your appointment — arrive without styling products

5

Inform Dr. Fong of all current medications, especially anticoagulants, corticosteroids, or immunosuppressants

The Treatment Session (~60–75 min)

1

Scalp Assessment

Dr. Fong reviews your hair loss pattern and scalp condition, confirms the injection map, and answers any questions before proceeding.

2

Blood Draw & PRP Preparation

Approximately 20–30 mL of blood is drawn and processed in a calibrated centrifuge to yield platelet-rich plasma at 4–6× baseline concentration.

3

Scalp Numbing

Topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the scalp and allowed to take full effect before injections begin, minimizing discomfort.

4

Precision PRP Injection

Dr. Fong administers fine-needle microinjections across the mapped thinning zones, delivering PRP at follicle depth. Mild scalp pressure and pinpoint bleeding are normal during this phase.

After Your Session

1

Expect mild scalp soreness and occasional pinpoint bleeding at injection sites — this typically resolves within 24–48 hours

2

Avoid washing your hair for 12–24 hours after treatment; use a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo when you do

3

Skip strenuous exercise, saunas, and hot tubs for 48 hours — heat and sweat can irritate the treated scalp

4

Do not apply topical minoxidil or other scalp medications for 24 hours post-injection unless instructed otherwise

5

A series of 3–4 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart is standard; Dr. Fong will schedule maintenance treatments (2–4×/year) based on your response

View Hair Restoration Results

*†Individual response varies. Clinical observations indicate visible density improvement at 12–16 weeks for appropriate candidates; peak response at 6 months. PRP does not regenerate permanently lost follicles. Results depend on hair loss stage, treatment adherence, and individual biology.

Common Questions

PRP Hair FAQ

How many PRP sessions are needed, and how often?+

A standard initial series consists of 3–4 monthly sessions (spaced approximately 4 weeks apart). After completing the series, most patients benefit from maintenance treatments 2–4 times per year to sustain density gains. Dr. Fong will personalize the schedule based on your hair loss severity and response after the first 1–2 sessions.

Is PRP hair treatment painful?+

Scalp sensitivity varies between patients. We apply topical anaesthetic cream before injections to minimize discomfort. During treatment, you may feel mild pressure and pinpoint stinging at each injection site. Scalp soreness for 24–48 hours post-session is common and expected — it is not a sign of a problem.

How soon will I see results?+

PRP works gradually. Clinical observations indicate that reduced shedding is often the first sign (noticed around weeks 4–8), followed by visible density improvement at 12–16 weeks. Peak results are typically seen at 6 months after completing the initial series. Growth is incremental — not dramatic or sudden.

Can PRP stop further hair loss?+

PRP can help stabilize progressive hair loss by improving the health of existing follicles and their resistance to DHT-related miniaturization. It is not a cure for androgenetic alopecia, and ongoing maintenance is needed to sustain the benefit. Combining PRP with medical therapy (minoxidil, finasteride) may improve long-term outcomes — Dr. Fong will discuss options at consultation.

Who is not a good candidate for PRP hair therapy?+

PRP is not appropriate for patients with blood disorders, platelet dysfunction, or those on anticoagulant therapy. It is also not indicated for active scalp infection, scarring alopecia, active alopecia areata flare, or complete baldness (no viable follicles remaining). Pregnancy and breastfeeding are also contraindications. A full medical history review is completed before every first treatment.
