How Does Laser Hair Removal Work at Skin Art MD?
Laser hair removal uses light absorbed by the pigment in hair to damage the follicle and reduce regrowth. At Skin Art MD in Burnaby we use the Vectus diode laser, with a Skintel reader that measures your skin tone to guide settings. It aims for long-term reduction across a series of sessions; a physician assessment decides suitability.
Vectus is a dedicated diode hair-removal laser, which differs from the broad-spectrum light of IPL devices. Because hair grows in cycles, treatment is repeated over several sessions. Hair that is white, grey or very light responds poorly because there is little pigment for the laser to target.
Skintel Melanin Reader
The reader measures your skin tone before treatment so settings can be matched, which helps for melanin-rich or tanned skin.
Contact Cooling
A chilled sapphire tip cools the skin before, during and after each pulse for comfort.
Fast Coverage
A large spot size lets larger areas such as the back or legs be treated efficiently.

What Does the Laser Target?
The 810 nm diode wavelength is absorbed by melanin in the hair, which turns to heat and damages the follicle. Treated hairs shed over the following one to two weeks.
Measure
The Skintel reader sends your melanin index to the laser.
Cool and Glide
The chilled sapphire tip is placed on the skin as pulses are delivered.
Target the Follicle
Laser energy travels down the hair to the follicle, reducing its ability to regrow.
Shedding
Over one to two weeks the treated hairs push out and fall away.
Who Do Clinicians Consider for Laser Hair Removal?
Darker, coarser hair responds best because the laser targets pigment; white, grey and very light hair respond poorly. Deeper or tanned skin holds more melanin too, so skin tone is measured and settings are matched to lower the risk of burns or pigment change. A physician assessment decides suitability.

What Is Different About Laser Hair Removal at Skin Art MD?
Settings that are wrong for a skin tone can cause burns or pigment change. Here treatment is physician-led, with measured rather than guessed settings.
Physician-Led Clinic
Plans sit within the care of the clinic's medical director, Dr. Charles Jiang.
Measured Skin Tone
The Skintel reader measures melanin instead of relying on a visual guess.
Hygiene Routines
Equipment is cleaned between clients.
Face and Body
Treatment is available for the face, underarms, bikini and Brazilian areas, legs and back, for men and women.
Which Areas Can Be Treated?
Most areas can be treated; the physician advises on any that need caution.
Face
Upper lip, chin, sideburns and full face.
Underarms
A common first area for laser hair removal.
Bikini and Brazilian
Intimate areas treated with discretion.
Legs
Full legs, thighs, calves and knees.
Back and Shoulders
Large areas treated efficiently.
What Happens During a Laser Hair Removal Visit?
Hair is treated across a series because it grows in cycles, with sessions typically 4 to 8 weeks apart. A small area such as the underarms takes about 15 minutes; large areas such as full legs or the back take up to about an hour. Most people feel a quick snap and warmth, and numbing cream can be used on sensitive areas. There is little downtime: redness usually settles within a day or two, treated hair sheds over one to two weeks, and occasional maintenance sessions are common.
Before Your Visit
Shave the area about 24 hours before the appointment
Do not wax, pluck or thread for about four weeks beforehand
Avoid sun and tanning on the area

Laser Hair Removal Burnaby Questions Answered
Does laser hair removal hurt?+
Most people describe a quick snap, like a rubber band against the skin, with brief warmth. The chilled sapphire tip cools the skin during each pulse, which helps. Sensitivity varies by area: the upper lip and bikini line often feel sharper than the legs or back. Numbing cream can be used on sensitive areas; mention it when you book so there is time for it to take effect.
How many sessions are needed?+
Most people need about 6 to 8 sessions, spaced about 4 to 8 weeks apart. Hair grows in cycles and the laser only affects hairs in the active growth phase, so each session catches a different group of hairs. The face, hormonal areas and lighter hair may need more. The physician sets the plan after looking at your hair, skin and the area.
Can hair grow back after laser hair removal?+
Laser aims for permanent hair reduction, not permanent removal. After a course, treated areas usually grow fewer, finer and lighter hairs, but some regrowth is normal. Hormonal changes, including conditions such as PCOS, can activate new follicles, and those areas often need more sessions. Occasional maintenance sessions, often once or twice a year, are common.
Does it work on blonde, red or grey hair?+
Usually not well. The laser targets pigment in the hair, so white, grey and very light blonde or red hair has little for it to absorb and responds poorly. Dark hair responds best. If most of the hair in an area is light, the physician will tell you at the assessment whether laser is worth trying or whether another method suits you better.
Can I shave or wax before treatment and between sessions?+
Shave the area about 24 hours before each visit, and shaving between sessions is fine. Do not wax, pluck, thread or use an epilator for about four weeks before your first session or at any point during the course, because the laser needs the hair root present in the follicle. Let treated hairs shed on their own rather than pulling them out.
Is it suitable for melanin-rich or tanned skin?+
It can be, with measured settings. Deeper and tanned skin holds more melanin, which competes with the hair for the laser energy and raises the risk of burns or pigment change if settings are guessed. The Skintel reader measures your melanin so the physician can choose settings suited to your skin, and a test area may be done first. Treatment is delayed after a recent tan.
Which areas can be treated, and do you treat men?+
Common areas are the face (upper lip, chin, sideburns), underarms, bikini and Brazilian areas, legs, and back and shoulders. Skin Art MD treats both men and women, and men often ask about the back, shoulders and neckline. Session time depends on the size of the area, from about 15 minutes for the underarms to about an hour for full legs or the back.
What is the difference between laser and IPL hair removal?+
IPL (intense pulsed light) uses a broad spectrum of light, while Vectus is a dedicated diode laser at one wavelength aimed at hair pigment. Both are used for hair reduction and both need a series of sessions. Which suits you depends on your hair, skin tone and the area, and the physician explains the options at assessment. The DPL Photo Facial page covers light-based skin treatments.
What is recovery like, and what should I avoid afterwards?+
Mild redness or small bumps around the follicles are common and usually settle within a day or two. For about 24 to 48 hours, avoid sun, saunas, hot baths and strenuous exercise, and use sunscreen on treated areas. Most people go back to work or normal activities straight away. Treated hairs shed over one to two weeks.
When will I notice results?+
Treated hairs usually shed within one to two weeks of a session. A visible reduction often shows after the first 2 to 3 sessions, and the overall result is judged once the course is complete. Hairs that were resting during one session grow in later and are treated at the next, which is why sessions are spaced weeks apart. Results vary with hair colour, hormones and area.
Where is it offered near Vancouver?+
Skin Art MD is at #101 – 4378 Beresford St, Burnaby, a short walk from Metrotown Station on the Expo Line, which makes it easy to reach from Vancouver, New Westminster and Richmond. The clinic is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00. Consultations are available in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
Can I have laser hair removal while pregnant or breastfeeding?+
Treatment is postponed during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. There is little safety research on laser hair removal in pregnancy, and hormonal changes at that time can affect hair growth and results. You can start or resume your course afterwards, once you and your doctor are comfortable. Let the team know at booking so the timing can be planned.
