Radiesse® in Burnaby (CaHA Filler)

Structure now, collagen support later.

Radiesse® is a calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) filler. It is firmer than hyaluronic acid gels, so it is often chosen to define the jawline, chin and cheekbones, and it also stimulates your own collagen as it settles. Results are visible immediately and typically last 12-18 months. At Skin Art MD in Burnaby's Metrotown, a physician plans placement.

The Science

What Is CaHA Filler?

A firmer filler that doubles as a collagen-stimulating scaffold.

Made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres in a carrier gel, it gives an immediate mechanical lift and acts as a scaffold for new collagen. Over time the gel is absorbed while your own collagen network remains. A physician assessment decides whether it suits you.

Immediate Definition

Its firmness suits areas that need structure, such as the jawline and chin.

Collagen Support

Stimulates collagen production around the microspheres, which can improve skin quality over time.

Hand Rejuvenation

Can be used to restore volume to the back of the hands, where veins and tendons can become prominent.

CaHA Technology

How Does It Work?

Immediate structure, then gradual collagen support.

The Scaffold

The microspheres create a structure that your cells attach to, like vines growing on a trellis.

Planned Placement

Depth and amount are mapped to the bone landmarks of your face so the result looks natural.

Gradual Change

As the carrier gel is absorbed, new tissue helps support the area.

Body-Familiar Mineral

CaHA is chemically similar to the mineral portion of bone and is gradually metabolised by the body.

Suitability

Who Might Consider CaHA Filler?

Often discussed by people who want defined structure. A physician assessment decides suitability.

Commonly Discussed For

  • +Undefined or weak jawline/chin
  • +Deep nasolabial folds
  • +Marionette lines or lower-face volume loss
  • +Hands with visible veins and tendons
  • +Wanting structure and lift in areas such as the jawline, chin or cheekbones

Not a Fit If

  • –You want lips or under-eyes treated (the gel is too firm for these areas)
  • –You may want to dissolve the result later (CaHA cannot be dissolved like HA fillers)
  • –Active infection, or pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • –Blood-thinning medication or a bleeding disorder (discuss with your physician first)
  • –Known allergy to lidocaine or a product ingredient
Our Approach

How Do We Plan Treatment?

We plan around facial structure, not just individual lines.

1

Structural Planning

Placement is planned deep on the bone to support the face from beneath.

2

Vector Planning

Cannulas can be used to place product along lines of support that lift and balance the face.

3

Whole-Face View

Firm CaHA may be paired with softer HA filler elsewhere, with a plan set by your physician.

4

Comfort

Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand, and the product may include a numbing ingredient.

Zones

Which Areas Can Be Treated?

Areas that benefit from structure and support.

Jawline

Defines the separation between face and neck.

Chin Projection

Balances the profile by adding chin projection.

Cheekbones

Supports the cheekbones to lift and contour the face.

Hands

Softens visible veins and tendons on the back of the hands.

Smile Lines

Deep support at the base of the nasolabial folds.

Marionette Lines

Supports the area running from the corners of the mouth toward the chin.

The Visit

What Happens During a Visit?

A Radiesse visit has three parts: preparation, the injection itself, and aftercare. A physician assessment comes first and decides whether treatment is suitable.

Prep

1

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand.

2

Arrive without makeup.

3

Tell your physician about any blood-thinning medication, supplements or allergies.

4

Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and similar blood thinners for about a week beforehand unless your physician advises otherwise.

During

1

Map

Skeletal landmarks are assessed and marked.

2

Numb

Topical numbing cream is applied, and the product may contain a numbing ingredient.

3

Inject

Usually performed with a blunt-tipped cannula to help limit bruising. A visit typically takes about 30-45 minutes.

4

Mold

The product is gently moulded into shape.

After

1

Avoid pressure on the area.

2

Sleep on your back for a couple of nights.

3

Expect some swelling (it looks better once settled).

4

Avoid strenuous exercise and saunas for the first 24-48 hours.

5

The result is visible right away and settles over about 2 weeks. Collagen support develops over about 3-4 months, and results typically last 12-18 months.

FAQ

The Basics

Can it be dissolved?+

No. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, CaHA cannot be dissolved with an enzyme and is metabolised naturally over time. That is why careful planning matters.

Will it feel hard or stiff?+

It feels firmer than HA filler initially, which is why it suits bone-like structure such as the jaw and chin. Once settled it should not feel hard to the touch.

What is CaHA filler?+

Calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres in a carrier gel. It adds immediate structure and stimulates your own collagen as the gel is absorbed.

Can it be used on the hands as well as the face?+

Yes, it is used for hand rejuvenation as well as for the jawline, chin and cheekbones. Your physician advises on which areas suit you.

How is it different from HA filler and from a collagen biostimulator like Sculptra®?+

Radiesse® gives immediate volume and structure, then collagen support later. HA fillers are softer and can be dissolved with an enzyme. Sculptra® builds volume gradually over months. Your physician advises which, or which combination, suits your goals.

When is CaHA chosen over HA filler, and why not for lips or under-eyes?+

Firmer CaHA suits areas that need structure, like the jawline, chin and cheekbones. Lips and the under-eye area are thin and mobile, so softer HA gels, which can also be dissolved if needed, are generally used there. Your physician advises on each area.

When will I see results, and how long do they last?+

The lift is visible straight away, swelling settles over about 2 weeks, and collagen support develops over about 3-4 months. Results typically last 12-18 months, varying by person and area. Some people schedule smaller follow-ups.

Who performs the injections at Skin Art MD?+

Injections are performed by Dr. Sharon Fong, a physician, under the medical direction of Dr. Charles Jiang, Medical Director.

Does it hurt, and what should I do afterwards?+

Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand and the product may contain a numbing ingredient. Most people resume normal activities the same day. Avoid pressure on the area, strenuous exercise and saunas for 24-48 hours, sleep on your back for a couple of nights, and expect swelling for about 2 weeks.

Who should not have this treatment?+

It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding or with an active infection in the area. Tell your physician about your medical history and any allergies.

How many syringes will I need?+

It depends on the areas treated, your bone structure and your goals. Your physician assesses you, estimates the amount area by area and explains the plan before any treatment. Some people are treated in one visit and return for a smaller follow-up later.

Where can I get this treatment in Burnaby?+
