The Ultimate Post-Treatment Skincare Guide: How to Care for Your Skin After Botox, Fillers, Laser & Microneedling

You did the research, chose the right clinic, and committed to your aesthetic treatment. Congratulations — but the work is not done yet. What happens in the hours, days, and weeks after your procedure has a massive impact on your final results, healing speed, and how long those results last.

At SkinArtMD at Metrotown, we give every client a personalized aftercare plan. But whether you are brand new to medical aesthetics or a seasoned regular, this comprehensive guide will help you navigate the post-treatment window with confidence.

Why Post-Treatment Care Matters So Much

Think of it this way: a treatment creates the potential for great results. Your aftercare is what turns that potential into reality. Poor aftercare can lead to:

  • Prolonged swelling and bruising that could have been minimized
  • Infection risk if the treatment area is not kept clean
  • Compromised results from premature sun exposure or aggressive skincare
  • Hyperpigmentation — especially in deeper skin tones after laser treatments
  • Uneven healing that affects the final aesthetic outcome

The good news? Following a few simple principles dramatically improves every metric. Let us break it down by treatment type.

Post-Botox & Neuromodulator Care

Botox, Dysport, and Nuceiva are among the most straightforward procedures in terms of aftercare, but there are still important guidelines to follow.

The First 4 Hours

  • Stay upright — avoid lying down or bending over for at least 4 hours after injection
  • Do not touch, rub, or massage the treated areas. This can cause the product to migrate to unintended muscles
  • Avoid hats, headbands, or tight eyewear that press on injection sites
  • Skip the workout — no exercise, hot yoga, or heavy lifting for the rest of the day

Days 1-3

  • No facials, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion for at least 48-72 hours
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours (it increases bruising risk)
  • Sleep on your back if possible for the first night
  • Mild headache is normal — use acetaminophen if needed, but avoid ibuprofen or aspirin as they thin the blood

Days 3-14

  • Results begin to show around day 3-5, with full effect at 10-14 days
  • Do not panic if results seem uneven at first — the product settles at different rates across muscle groups
  • Book your follow-up at the 2-week mark so your injector can assess symmetry and make adjustments if needed

Products to Use

  • Gentle, fragrance-free cleanser (CeraVe, La Roche-Posay Toleriane)
  • Lightweight moisturizer without active acids
  • SPF 30+ mineral sunscreen daily

Products to Avoid

  • Retinoids and retinol for 48 hours
  • AHAs, BHAs, and glycolic acid for 48 hours
  • Vitamin C serums at full strength for 24 hours
  • Any exfoliating tools or scrubs for 72 hours

Post-Filler Care (Dermal Fillers, Lip Filler, Cheek Filler)

Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm and Restylane require a bit more careful aftercare due to the volume of product placed and the swelling that naturally follows.

The First 6 Hours

  • Apply cold compresses gently — wrapped ice, not directly on skin — for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off
  • Do not massage unless your injector specifically instructs you to (some filler types benefit from light molding during placement, but this is done in-clinic)
  • Expect swelling — this is completely normal, especially with lip filler where swelling can be quite dramatic on day 1
  • Avoid kissing, sucking through straws, or exaggerated facial movements if you had lip filler

Days 1-5

  • Swelling peaks at 24-48 hours and then gradually subsides
  • Bruising is common and can take 5-10 days to fully resolve
  • Arnica supplements or cream can help speed bruise resolution
  • Sleep elevated with an extra pillow to reduce morning puffiness
  • Avoid intense heat — saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and prolonged hot showers
  • No dental work for 2 weeks after lip or nasolabial filler

Days 5-14

  • Filler continues to settle and integrate with your tissue
  • Final results are best assessed at the 2-week mark once all swelling has resolved
  • You may feel small lumps or firmness — this is normal and usually resolves as the filler hydrates and settles
  • Gentle facial massage may be recommended by your provider at this stage if any unevenness persists

Products to Use

  • Arnica gel or tablets starting the day of treatment
  • Gentle hydrating cleanser
  • Hyaluronic acid serum (helps hydrate from outside while the filler hydrates from inside)
  • Rich barrier-repair moisturizer
  • Mineral sunscreen SPF 30+

Products to Avoid

  • Retinoids for 5-7 days
  • Chemical exfoliants (AHA, BHA) for 5-7 days
  • Makeup on injection sites for 12 hours (to minimize infection risk)
  • Blood-thinning supplements: fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba for 48 hours post-treatment

Post-Laser Treatment Care (PicoWay, Fractional Laser, IPL)

Laser treatments — from gentle IPL to more intense fractional resurfacing — require the most diligent aftercare because they create controlled micro-injuries in the skin that must heal properly.

The First 24 Hours

  • Redness and warmth are expected — your skin will feel like a mild sunburn
  • Apply a gentle, occlusive moisturizer (Aquaphor, CeraVe Healing Ointment) to keep the treatment area hydrated
  • Cool compresses can soothe discomfort — avoid ice directly on treated skin
  • No makeup, active skincare, or fragrance on the treated area
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands

Days 1-5

  • Micro-crusting, flaking, or peeling may occur depending on the intensity of the laser — this is the skin renewing itself
  • Do NOT pick, peel, or scrub the flaking skin — let it shed naturally to prevent scarring and hyperpigmentation
  • Keep the skin constantly moisturized — reapply healing ointment 3-5 times per day if needed
  • Avoid sweating — no intense exercise, saunas, or hot yoga for 3-5 days
  • No swimming in pools, hot tubs, or the ocean (chlorine and bacteria are enemies of healing skin)

Days 5-14

  • New, fresh skin is emerging — it may look pink or slightly darker before normalizing
  • SPF is absolutely non-negotiable — wear SPF 50 mineral sunscreen every single day, rain or shine, indoors or out
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours if you are outdoors
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 4-6 weeks — this is the number one rule for preventing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Begin gradually reintroducing your regular skincare products, one at a time

Weeks 2-6

  • Full collagen remodeling continues beneath the surface for up to 3-6 months
  • Continue rigorous sun protection — your new skin is vulnerable
  • You may begin using gentle vitamin C serum and retinol again at the 2-4 week mark (ask your provider)
  • Results continue improving over weeks and months as new collagen builds

Products to Use

  • Healing ointment (Aquaphor, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5)
  • Centella asiatica or cica-based soothing serums
  • Hyaluronic acid for hydration
  • SPF 50 mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide based — gentler on healing skin)
  • Broad-spectrum antioxidant serum (once cleared by your provider)

Products to Avoid

  • ALL active ingredients for 5-14 days (retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, niacinamide at high concentrations)
  • Fragrance in any product
  • Physical exfoliants (scrubs, brushes, washcloths)
  • Alcohol-based toners
  • Essential oils

Post-Microneedling & RF Microneedling Care (Sylfirm X, SkinPen, Morpheus8)

Microneedling creates thousands of tiny channels in the skin — incredible for collagen stimulation, but those channels also mean the skin is temporarily more permeable and vulnerable.

The First 12 Hours

  • Redness is expected — your skin will look like a moderate sunburn
  • Pinpoint bleeding may occur with deeper treatments — this resolves within hours
  • Apply only what your provider recommends — usually a hyaluronic acid serum or growth factor serum
  • No water on your face for the first 4-6 hours (your provider may adjust this timeline)
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase — ideally silk or freshly laundered

Days 1-3

  • Skin may feel tight, dry, and warm
  • Gentle cleanser only — no active ingredients
  • Hydrate aggressively — hyaluronic acid serum, followed by a rich moisturizer
  • No makeup for 24-48 hours to avoid pushing pigments and bacteria into open channels
  • Avoid sweating, saunas, and hot showers for 48-72 hours

Days 3-7

  • Mild peeling or flaking is normal — do not pick
  • You may notice a "glow" as the initial healing phase completes
  • Begin gradually reintroducing your regular products (test one new product per day)
  • SPF 30-50 daily is mandatory

Days 7-28

  • Collagen production is actively ramping up beneath the surface
  • Full results develop over 4-6 weeks as new collagen matures
  • Resume your full skincare routine by day 7-10 (retinol can typically restart at day 5-7)
  • Schedule your next session if you are doing a series (typically 3-6 treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart)

Products to Use

  • Growth factor serum (if provided by your clinic)
  • Pure hyaluronic acid serum
  • Ceramide-rich moisturizer
  • SPF 50 mineral sunscreen
  • Centella/cica soothing products

Products to Avoid

  • ALL actives for 72 hours minimum (retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide)
  • Makeup for 24-48 hours
  • Fragrance and essential oils for 5 days
  • Chlorinated water or ocean water for 5-7 days
  • Alcohol-based products

Universal Post-Treatment Rules (Every Procedure)

Regardless of what treatment you had, these rules apply across the board:

  1. Hydrate from the inside — drink plenty of water in the days following any procedure. Well-hydrated skin heals faster.

  2. Protect from the sun — UV exposure is the number one enemy of healing skin and can cause hyperpigmentation, scarring, and premature aging of treated areas.

  3. Do not pick, scratch, or peel — let your skin heal on its own timeline. Forcing it causes scarring.

  4. Communicate with your provider — if something looks or feels abnormal, reach out immediately. Early intervention prevents complications.

  5. Be patient — most aesthetic treatments have results that unfold over days to weeks. Trust the process.

  6. Keep your routine simple — when in doubt, strip your skincare back to basics: gentle cleanser, hydrating moisturizer, SPF. You can always add products back later.

Building a Post-Treatment Skincare Kit

We recommend keeping a dedicated post-treatment kit at home so you are prepared every time:

  • Gentle cleanser: CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser or La Roche-Posay Toleriane
  • Healing ointment: Aquaphor or La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5
  • Hyaluronic acid serum: SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier or The Ordinary HA
  • Rich moisturizer: CeraVe Moisturizing Cream or First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream
  • Mineral SPF 50: EltaMD UV Clear or La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral
  • Arnica gel/tablets: For bruise-prone treatments (fillers, Botox)
  • Clean silk pillowcase: Reduces friction on healing skin

When to Call Your Provider

Contact SkinArtMD or your treating clinician immediately if you experience:

  • Severe pain that worsens rather than improves after 24 hours
  • Skin blanching (white patches) after filler — this could indicate a vascular occlusion and requires urgent attention
  • Signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever
  • Blistering after laser treatment
  • Extreme asymmetry or unexpected changes in appearance
  • Allergic reaction symptoms: widespread rash, difficulty breathing, severe swelling beyond the treated area
